Undergångens Arkitektur plot

"The Nazi philosophy of beauty through violence"

A documentary about the aesthetic view of the life of National Socialists in Nazi Germany, and how they pursued the 'Aryan ideal' through this view of life. Among other things, it discusses Adolf Hitler's love for Wagner's opera 'Rienzi', the rise and glorification of homoerotic Greek/Norwegian ideals. Comparisons are also drawn between certain art movements and the National Socialist obsession for 'purity' and 'beauty'.

You would think that half a century later there would be little news to tell about Nazism. Yet this Swedish film makes a successful attempt to emphasize the relationship between Adolf Hitler's world view and art in its many facets. Hitler, a failed painter and considering himself a great architect, was obsessed with banishing what he considered "degenerate art" and from there it was only a short step to the extermination of "degenerate" people: the disabled, gypsies, gays and Jews. So that a 'pure' and 'clean' race would arise. He almost succeeded. The film makes clear connections and shows many images that I had never seen before.
