Hom Rong plot
"He fights through his music."
The film is based on the life of the Thai musical master Luang Pradith Phairao. Sorn learns to play the ranard-ek, the Thai wooden xylophone, by practicing at night in an abandoned temple. This against the wishes of his environment and his parents, because Sorn's older brother was once beaten to death by competing musicians. Once his environment is convinced of his talent and Sorn is allowed to develop as a musician, the boy becomes quite impressed by his own talent. He becomes more and more casual and arrogant. He seems ripe for a lesson in humility, which he gets in a musical contest against the master Im Khun. His loss makes him repent and as a result he becomes a court musician. But also in his later life he retains his stubbornness and his passion for traditional music. When the playing of traditional music is banned during the war, Sorn does not resign himself to it.
