Bangkok Dangerous plot

Kong is a professional assassin who has been unable to speak since childhood. Kong is cold, deadly and quiet. The gruesome work he does is a constant and impersonal revenge on the world around him. Violence for him is only an outlet for his emotions. When his best friend gets shot, he tries to look at things differently, but is emotionally incapable of doing so. The arrival of the young girl Fon seems to change that...

strong. Especially the disco scenes are visually overwhelming, furthermore a strong soundtrack and a flashy montage. Sometimes the pace isn't quite mine, but that's only on moments. It does leave me with an 'almost, but not quite' feeling afterwards.

The story was nice, the main character of course has a tough profession, but nevertheless comes across as very sympathetic to me. Nice, by the way, how audiovisually they deal with the fact that he is deaf. There is clearly a chemistry with the other characters, of course especially with the girl Fon, who is played by a very pretty lady. The whole feels genuine, that's why I like to give 4*.

Little gem. All under the guise of saying it with images. The Pangs use a richly filled box of tricks to tell their story, all kinds of visual mess, too much to mention and that may initially result in a somewhat whirling story, but where such a back story often comes about in a convulsive way, it gets a lot of extra cachet here.

A bit erratic in its (many) music choices and with relatively little dialogue, it's almost impossible if your lead role is deaf-mute, but I like the cool, taciturn type. Both tough, but also brittle. Beautiful roles that are brightened by the relationship with the two ladies. Especially around Fon, the Pangs keep it delicate enough to actually represent something.

Meanwhile, there is also a fatalistic atmosphere in the film. It stems from the profession and from the environment, but there is also a gray-due veil over the usually cheerful Asian colors. An ideal hotbed for something like this, this sultry Bangkok with its busy nightlife and underworld. The turning point, the rapescene, is cut intensely and raw.

I think that's the beauty of this movie. It works as a whole, but many of the individual scenes are really delicious. You can use them as short films. Like, for example, the assassination attempt on the mysterious target. Wonderfully portrayed. So shadowy that it becomes scary, a nightmare, a kind of urban horror. Not the only thing that is pleasing to the eye.

Nice review.

I had expected that the film would come across as a bit more dated, it is also clearly a product of the 90s. Yet this film has more to offer than just what was hip back then.

Visually still strong, the soundtrack is also quite nice. The Pangs model a cool and tight film with it, which halfway also gets just enough depth to make the end score on two levels. It is both emotionally and action-wise.

Nice start to their career, even before they went more into horror (although of course they have never been exclusively horror directors, it may only seem that way because of the arbitrariness in the West). Very nice crime/action movie that didn't really need a remake.

4.5* and a extended review
