Unfortunately this is not one of my best films. For the DVD I doubled the running time to 97 minutes, but it still makes do. Some beautiful shots, especially underwater, but the documentary wanders in all directions and more than once has too much Disney content.

Cameron's expensive hobby.

In between blockbusters, the world's most successful director likes to make documentaries. Or rather, he films himself dry humping with expensive water toys. James believes that if you make a mess of sinking boats, you should dive after them in real life. What else to do with all those billions? Also a nice excuse not to think too much about yourself.

What is presented to the viewer is not a feast. The most expensive gadgets, cameras and submarines are used to make the director realize his dream. By the way, under the motto of serving the earth, because James was not born solely to secure DiCaprio's pension. Are you crazy?

The crew that the bearded filmmaker has gathered around him consists of horny yes-men who, while sporadically seeing a real animal, shout cool things like "Holy Pancakes Batman!". Even in James' documentaries there is no swearing or farting.

The most annoying thing, besides the deadly dullness and detachment that accompanies this unnecessary work, is the absence of the aliens themselves. Apparently there were no more than three fish and a shrimp. A lot of Cameron and his forcedly enthusiastic crew of smooth disciples. And of course CGI, because James wouldn't be James if... Exactly. And so everything is enhanced with special effects, with the ending being the low point. Although it does provide the nice feeling that this lame documentary is finally over.

So much better work has been made within this genre. Although we suspect that this will not be the last water documentary that the director will throw at us. However, one beard does not make a Cousteau.

Mediocre.

Mediocre.

I'm not much into nature documentaries, but I'm usually up for some underwater fun. Yet this film does not quite meet the standards. Anyone hoping to see a rich underwater fauna will be quite disappointed. There are some nice creatures in there, but not what you expect from a 90+ minute documentary.

Furthermore, a lot of fuss about shrimps, crabs and warm water. Quite fascinating from a scientific perspective, but it is not really interesting. Furthermore, I didn't think the talk about life outside Earth was very good. Bland CG models and a lot of dreams that seem based on little.

I also got quite tired of the overenthusiastic crew. Everything is amazing and fantastic, nice and inflated American. Now it must have been fun for the people present, but in my opinion the documentary is a bit too happy. Even setbacks are used to teach moralistic lessons.

It contains fascinating moments, but as a documentary itself it is not really successful.

2.0*
