My Ain Folk plot

The second part of the trilogy, in which we are given a glimpse into the strange world of grown-ups through Jamie's eyes. Jamie and Tommy (who now turns out to be his nephew) are left alone after their grandmother's death. When child protection officers come to collect him, he manages to escape and finds shelter with his paternal grandmother and an uncle. The old woman would rather let him stay than hand him over to the Children's Guardians, though she doesn't like him, nor does she waste a moment pointing out to him that his mother has ruined her son's life. This beloved son -Jamie now realizes that this is his father- lives in the house next door with another woman, Agnes, and another son.

Here the story is a bit tighter than in "My Childhood" but the characteristics are the same. Indifference and lovelessness are still the words that cross young Jamie's path and the selfishness and mental weakness in the world that surrounds him is increasingly underlined. Rarely has a child been seen so full of fear in the corner of the room or under a chair on the screen. Here too there are some strong scenes with, admittedly, actors who do a more than decent job.
