A subject that I always find interesting, but in this film it is very poorly developed. Nowhere does the film get exciting, nowhere does it go into depth and a certain form of intensity and sympathy is lacking. The film is way too long-winded, so you don't keep watching.

Again and again you hope that you have bridged the boring half hour or hour so that we will finally go into the depths. So that dialogues become stronger and there is also more zooming in on the time in which the film takes place. That the hatred and racism are highlighted more and you get sympathy for the protagonists and a certain envy of the time in which it takes place. But again and again you are disappointed, because the film is long-winded and remains bland.

I expected more intensity from the situation in prison . Also from the moment that the police rings the doorbell when they have returned to their hometown, while they were forbidden. I then put my hopes on the second half, which mainly takes place on a legal level and in court. But here too a disappointment.

Cinematographically, the film is certainly fine, beautiful images. But the elaboration of the story is lousy.

1*

Certainly not at the level of Nichol's previous two films. A bit oscarbait, but Nichols rightly avoids sentimentality. The Lovings were not sentimental people but both humble people of few words. Loving has an important issue as its theme, but that is also a handicap. You can't make it more than what it is. And the thing is, Lovings weren't very into all that interest, and no talkers aren't that saucy. And there isn't much of Nichols in this film either. Edgerton and Negga are very strong and avoid big gestures but exchange a lot of nice little moments and glances. But this is not a surprising or exciting film.

Not a fan!

The subject is presented without too much depth,

the acting is flat and boring, hard to get sympathy with the main characters.

Film colors far too safely within the lines, neither meat nor fish. *2.0
