"A classic story about forbidden love."

Love drama in which the black painter Gabriel Goedbloed chooses the black teacher Ava Recordina as the model for the mural of the Virgin Mary to be made for a church in Curaçao. The idea of a black Madonna being painted in front of the church is causing a stir among the local bourgeoisie. In addition, tensions among Ava's lovers are also running high.

The film has surprisingly few viewers here, although it is well-regarded in all but one case. Strange, though. It's set in part of the Kingdom, partly in Dutch and partly in Papiamento, with a partially Dutch cast. It's a pretty good film, set immediately after World War II. The Antilles were still a colony, and the Dutch government was in charge. Things were already starting to fray, and we see those cracks in this film as well.

The film is set in Curaçao and has a distinctly Antillean feel, so it's busy, chaotic, and filled with drama and violence. A painter creates a painting and mural of a Black Madonna, which naturally doesn't sit well with the predominantly Dutch upper class. It's a matter of cultural differences, of course, because the painter is of Surinamese descent, and the Dutch see their power challenged. The "love story" is a bit of an afterthought, in my opinion, and a common thread is difficult to discern. Nevertheless, it's an interesting and colorful film.
