When I first saw the film, a friend of mine said, "It's really a film you should see with your back to the screen," referring, of course, to the formidable singing voice of the then-wildly popular singer, who really did somewhat overshadow the story. I thought that was a bit of an exaggeration, because there's a certain charm and emotion in Enrico Caruso's story, and Ann Blyth plays her role with such tenderness.

A lovely film to watch again after years.

Conventional and a bit superficial, but I enjoyed the first hour in particular. After that, it gets bogged down a bit in the typical 1950s romance between Caruso and Dorothy. Ann Blyth also has a role where she always seems to have to look longing, which is very tiring.

By the way, the film is only partly based on reality.
