Exit plot

Exit is a flashback of a fifty-year-old man. He remembers the moment when, as a young photographer, he was working on an exhibition of his own artistic work when he was unexpectedly commissioned to make a video clip. The offer initially seems to be the solution for his financial and relationship problems, but during the preparations an unprocessed childhood trauma causes unexpected complications, and everything threatens to end in a fiasco.

A delightful, captivating, and often fascinating film. Beautiful compositions and visual tricks. The meager plot of the photographer recalling an event from his youth that influenced his entire life is rendered secondary by the stunning design. It is primarily the alienating, stimulating images and the themes the film explores that impress the viewer. In this way, the film has more to offer than one might initially suspect. Eroticism, art, and kitsch; seduction, life, and death prove to be closer together than one might think. The way father and son De Nooijer present their findings to the viewer is fascinating, daring, and idiosyncratic, but above all, visually appealing.

Reminded me a bit of a mix between Van Warmerdam and Stelling (mainly as we know him from The Illusionist, The Switchman).

Not particularly captivating, unfortunately. Visually, it's mostly beautiful and interesting, but the meager plot doesn't quite captivate.

1.5*

Reading the plot like this, the film didn't quite come across as intended. It felt like I was watching a film about a photographer who shoots a music video for an American producer, but chooses art over commerce. It's certainly a vaguely artistic film with lots of beautiful sets and vibrant colors. A correspondingly vague story. But it did manage to intrigue me. I do have a thing for these kinds of films. And fans of the Golden Earring will also find plenty to enjoy in this film.
