Karlson has given birth to me before. Last year I watched Tight Spot which I really liked, but 5 Against the House was the worst movie of all of November. Before that I already saw a good film in Kansas City Confidential and afterwards a remarkably good film adaptation of a script by Fuller just Scandal Sheet. This movie also has Richard Conte who I hold in high esteem as a noir actor.

This film was probably made in response to the Kefau interrogations of the mid-1950s, from which literally dozens of films have drawn. That in combination with a story by none other than Georges Simenon. The result is a film where the pressure of organized crime is really palpable. A man who once did the administration for a family friend in the mafia. He thinks he is separate from it, but when they are on his doorstep and his younger brothers are also deep in organized crime. We are still very much in the Hays code era so we get an ending where the good one has to win anyway, that happens quickly as it often does. But the undertone of the film is a bit westernish. Conte thinks the crime is still as it was twenty years ago, but but that's why he lets himself be cheated and kills both brothers. The game has hardened. Family ties don't count.

Another really great film from Karlson.
