Otaku no Video plot

Otaku no Video (Fan's video) is an animated film that takes a look into the life of an Otaku (a completely unworldly anime/manga fan). The film takes a funny, sometimes even hilarious look at the anime industry, both through the countless references to every anime produced in Japan, and through the bits of 'real' filmed interviews with (ex-) Otaku.

Remains fascinating.

Clever mix of a number of styles and inserts, so that the film works on several fronts. Those who do not know much about the otaku culture will get a nice introduction here. The film is not blind to its flaws, but at the same time it is not dismissive. And on top of that, you also get a bit of history, as it's all based on the founding of the Gainax studio.

Half animation, half mockumentary, with the Gainax members actually making a bit of a fool of themselves. One is and remains a strange mix, but strangely enough it works very well together, and it also provides the necessary variety, so that it never gets too boring or too in-crowd.

The animation is neat, the fake docu segments are funny and the pace is fast. For a subject that is not very accessible, the film itself is. In the 30 years since release, some things have changed, but I think the core is still recognizable and relevant.

4.0* and a extensive review
