May 1940, Les Milles, near Aix-en-Provence. The French army has housed 2,000 German, Czech and Austrian refugees in an old factory. Camp commander Charles Perrochon is completely uninterested in the fate of these Jews, communists and anti-fascists. When the German army approaches the camp, the refugees revolt. Perrochon is faced with a dilemma: should he hand over the internees or offer them protection, as he has been ordered?

On TV5, with Dutch subtitles, and nowhere else to be found. So don't miss it. From the nineties. Back then, war-related films had to be Point 1: exciting and Point 2: have a comic note every now and then. Well, that's true and I don't really need it. But otherwise a fine film, with a small role for Philip Noiret, who is always a pleasure to watch. I don't know if that's how it all happened in reality, but it's certainly exciting and entertaining. Also, there aren't that many films set in the period May/June 1940. The French don't like that. There's a nice line in it: 'The French have made peace with Germany and declared war on France'. That's how it was.

Quote: "You danced around and imagined yourself in paradise, surrounded by Franco, Hitler and Mussolini" In the desperation of fear, chaos arises. Beautifully designed film about the camps that were set up in France for the "ethnic nationalities", in which Charles Perrochon (played by JP Marielle) understands how the future will develop and, as a "first" resistance hero, sets an act of resistance in motion.
