Stander plot

"Good cop. Great criminal."

In the early 1980s, police officer Andres Stander has had enough of the apartheid, crisis and poverty in South Africa, and decides in a fit of conscience that he must do something. However, he does this in an unusual way: by robbing banks with his associates Alan Heyl and Patrick McCallhet, dressed in the most imaginative disguises.

Strange film, at first I thought I was watching some kind of police drama, later turned into a light-hearted crime film.

Until the Stander Gang is formed, it's a rather uneven film that offers little interest.

Once the robberies start it's a fairly entertaining film to watch, but it doesn't excel anywhere.

An absurd story. The sheer brutality of Stander and his men seems to know no bounds – this is mainly what keeps the story exciting until the almost inevitable conclusion. Stander's motive is revealed, but perhaps could have been better substantiated.

Well acted, and not just by Thomas Jane, and some really beautiful shots of the landscape. What's a bit shocking is the way the people are walking; those 70s hairstyles always seem strange to me. It's a bit of a shock when I realize I've walked around like that myself

A compelling political drama in which the protagonist, Jane, takes on the apartheid regime in the 1980s after a life-changing event. He does this in his own unique way, along with Fletcher and O'Hara. The deeper layer is his inner struggle regarding his actions within the system, which ultimately culminates in a "history repeats" in reverse. The fact that the film is based on a true story makes it even more compelling. 3.7*
