A video nasty. That must be because of Donny's first victim. And indeed, that's quite a gruesome scene. Too bad for the film, the effect doesn't last. In that respect, it's a rather unfortunate arrangement. Everything surrounding that disco fits more into the buildup, the murder a bit later. The psychological sketch is also a bit facile. Those quickly become flashbacks, the voice acting in this case too. I would have liked to see Donny in that creepy outfit more often instead of another shot of charred dolls. The second half is simply a bit too tame. The grimy imagery—it's a throwback to the seventies—and that first, powerful punch make it somewhat worthwhile.

With one well-shot, fiery kill (which is also the first kill), it's not enough. More murder and mayhem follow, but nothing can match the first gruesome execution. The film largely fails to live up to the joyful anticipation of more shocking atrocities. It offers little more than a pleasant moment, at best. Disappointing.

The film has a decent lead role in Grimaldi, but it lacks depth. His issues with his mother initially promise plenty of fodder for psychological tension and thrills. However, this is disappointing. While the relationship between the domineering mother and the subservient son is quite interesting, this skewed relationship is treated very superficially. It remains at a single image and a single flashback. Very meager. The intensity necessary for successful tension and suspense never unfolds as a result. At best, the tension occasionally and lightly tugs at the heartstrings. Nothing more. No real underlying tension or genuine sense of dread overwhelms the viewer.

So, no great psychological tension or horror suspense. However, a constant sense of unease permeates the film. This is striking because the film itself is rather devoid of stimuli. The responsibility for that feeling lies with the main character. His stiff behavior and his sluggish madness create that vague feeling. And that's really due to the well-developed creepiness of the main character. The film surrounding it doesn't create that feeling.

The story moves slowly, and aside from the first kill, very little happens for a long time. Too much attention is paid to the musings of the protagonist, Grimaldi, who reminds him a bit of Dustin Hoffman. The horror elements are disappointing, and the film lacks any thrilling moments. 4/10
