After two failed attempts, I finally finished watching this second film version of Nabokov's intriguing book. I didn't like the Kubrick version much, this one is even less so. Jeremy Irons' grumpy face started to get to me after about half an hour and it didn't get any better as the film progressed. Dominique Swain looks nice, but like Sue Lyon in the original film, she too is too old for this role. As a result, both films miss the essence of the story in a crucial part. Nabokov's book is compelling; the two films made from it are anything but. It doesn't surprise me, by the way, because I think that “Lolita” cannot be filmed in a credible way without setting aside all kinds of decency rules. And I don't need that.

Also saw the 1962 version with James Mason and come to the conclusion that the task of giving this story the right tone is not so easy.

Thought the version with Irons was still presented quite discreetly, sober, without sensational scenes, which left the actual interaction between stepfather and stepdaughter somewhat obscure in the beginning.

Jeremy Irons, a different type of actor than James Mason, is also a good choice as a character-weak intellectual who gets carried away in such an adventure, but the prize for best performance goes without a doubt to the stunning Dominique Swain.

The ending of the film is rather absurd.

The music is suitably beautiful.

Good film about a writer who rents a room and falls in love with the daughter of the house. This remake differs somewhat in terms of story, especially in the second part and some scenes are portrayed more explicitly. This film also has a sometimes more dreamy atmosphere (the beautiful music underlines this). Well cast and well acted, but a bit too long.
