By far one of the worst 2nd World War films.

Acting wasn't very good.

The rest is technically good in terms of film.

Entertaining Dutch war/drama. Sometimes not really interesting and a bit annoying. For the rest there is not much wrong with it. 2.5.

Marga Minco's book was on my reading list for my grammar school exams at the time. I remember being very impressed with the story at the time. When (re)watching the film, I have that feeling much less. It is by definition a harrowing story, but I miss a bit of tension. Of course, that could also be because I now know how the story ends. It is strange that Esther Spitz's career never got off the ground, because she is not doing badly compared to the rest of the cast.
