Journalist Jake Barnes is wounded in World War I, after which the aristocratic Lady Brett Ashley nurses him in a sacrificial manner. However, their deep love is overshadowed by the fact that Jake is physically capable of little. After the war, Lady Ashley moves in intellectual circles, and she develops a relationship with the wealthy Count Mippipopplous. But she cannot remain faithful to him either.
