Ana Nojoom Bent Alasherah Wamotalagah plot
When she is only eight years old, Nojoom is forced to marry a man of thirty. However, she refuses to act like a wife. She escapes her husband's tyranny, only to file for divorce. Yemen has no law prohibiting child marriage or a minimum age of marriage. Thus, according to traditional custom, it is permissible for an older man to marry an eight-year-old girl. Partly due to the system of dowries, girls are pure commodities. When Nojoom's older sister is raped, her father sells his land and livestock and moves to protect the family honour. The family goes to the city, but has barely enough money. To cut costs, Nojoom's brother is sent to Saudi Arabia and Nojoom is sold to a farmer, who will marry her. She has no idea what marriage is all about and the reality turns out to be worse than her worst dreams.
