My Mother's Courage plot
Film about the deportation of 4000 Jews from Budapest to Auschwitz in July 1944, as told by George Tabori. About the way the narrator's mother escaped, with the necessary chance, guts and some help from the corner where you would never expect it.

Film doesn't get much appreciation here, even though it is a loaded subject, the deportation of Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz. The film is thirty years old and it shows. What is particularly striking is the messy structure, with the son telling his mother's story and then the journey of the mother herself in a train car, until she is miraculously 'rescued' halfway through. That all seemed rather unlikely to me. Moreover, those transports in those cattle trucks were gruesome, so the film leaves that out of the picture. Apparently it had to remain a light-hearted story. Hence the comic undertone. Wasn't for me.
