Only the Valiant plot

"GREGORY PECK, AS CAPTAIN LANCE, WHO GAVE FORT INVINCIBLE ITS NAME!"

The respectable Captain Richard Lance and Lieutenant William Holloway are both in love with the attractive Cathy, the daughter of Captain Eversham. Fort Commander Colonel Drumm first gives Lance the dangerous order to transfer the Apache Chief Tucsos, who was arrested in Fort Invincable, to another fortress, but since Drumm's fortress is also threatened, he wants to keep the experienced Lance with him. Lance now sends Holloway out with a small escort to transfer Tucsos. The Apaches free Tucsos en route and Holloway is killed. Lance is blamed by his subordinates for getting rid of a rival. Until he receives reinforcements from 400 soldiers, Drumm instructs Lance to defend Fort Invincable again, until reinforcements arrive. Lance chooses 7 of his greatest opponents to join him on this risky mission. In addition to the Apaches, Lance now also has his men as an opponent.

It takes a while for the film to really get going. The mutual resentment towards Lance is reasonably entertaining. Each man has his own reasons for hating him.

The fact that there are also attacks by Indians is less interesting.

I think this is one of Peck's lesser films. He doesn't do anything wrong, but his performance here isn't particularly sublime either.

Quite a bloody film for its time. No dying men clutching their undamaged shirts when they're hit.

It's a shame that such excellent films are not distributed in our regions!

I'm glad I read the posts here first, because despite the resulting low expectations, I actually quite enjoyed watching this. Gregory Peck may have hated this film, but I think he's perfectly suited to the role of the somewhat too-regular office-beater who solves things his own way. Besides, the cast is packed with familiar faces for Western fans, including Neville Brand and Stevie Brodie who can't stand each other, plus Lon Chaney who gets to go over the top. And Ward Bond actually gets a chance to show a bit more than he does when he's playing second fiddle to John Wayne in John Ford's films. The fortress where the second half of the film takes place almost becomes a separate character with all those ominous shadows and grim stone walls. Franz Waxman's dark score adds to the tension. There are several nice cliffhangers (what will Kebussyan do, will the two tied-up soldiers survive in the scorching sun, is the downed messenger still alive, how big is the rescue party really?), and the black-and-white looks stunning (although occasionally a bit studio-like). You won't hear me say this is a forgotten masterpiece, but I certainly think it's a nicely exaggerated and very enjoyable action western.
