The Stringer: The Man Who Took the Photo plot

The photo, informally called "Napalm Girl," shows a naked girl running in terror along a road in the village of Trang Bang in June 1972 after a napalm attack by the U.S. military. The photo has always been attributed to Nick Ut, an Associated Press photographer. But the documentary, based on forensic analysis and testimonies from several surviving AP staff members, suggests it was actually taken by a local correspondent, a man named Nguyễn Thành Nghệ. War photographer Gary Knight and a small team of journalists embark on a search.

A beautiful, confidently constructed documentary about one of the most famous photographs ever taken and the mystery behind it. War photographer Gary Knight and a small team of journalists embark on a quest for the truth. Initially, it seems a bit nitpicky, and you wonder how the filmmakers could fill an entire documentary with this subject, but gradually, both a human drama and a growing conspiracy unfold.

The photo of a group of children fleeing a napalm bombardment in Trang Bang on June 8, 1972, is one of the iconic images of the 20th century. “Napalm Girl” (featuring the nude Kim Phúc) was attributed to AP photographer Nick Út. Fifty years later, Carl Robinson, the editor who credited him, confessed that the photo was actually taken by a “stringer,” a local photographer who sold it to the General Press Bureau for pennies. Photojournalist Gary Knight investigates and presents compelling evidence in a documentary about how a rash decision led to a lie perpetuated for decades, but also about Vietnamese modesty.
