I'm not usually a fan of Italian films, but I thought this one was simply brilliant. Wonderful acting and a captivating story...not for everyone, as all the online reviews clearly show, but definitely my thing...

Before you read on: this is an Italian-language film. If you don't like that, stop here…

Described as drama/historical.

Historically okay, because it is based on true events.

But would sooner replace drama with crime.

So, a nice crime film about a counterfeiter who ends up in a political network.

What I love about this genre is that it tells a story. It's not easy at times, but that's precisely what fascinates me. Not just a popcorn action story, but a film with substance, especially since it's based on real events. A bit of a genre mafia.

What I had trouble following was the political narrative in the background, namely the debate between red and black. But even if you're not into that, like me, you can still follow and enjoy the film.

Set in the 1950s, this is beautifully portrayed with the occasional appropriate and enjoyable soundtrack.

What I also like about an Italian (read: non-Hollywood) film is that it is not about the perfect boys and girls, but that the focus was on acting and appearance.

Personally, a film to my liking. Lots of story and substance.

4*

Loosely based on fact, this crime drama follows three young Italians seeking their fortune in 1970s Rome. Artist Toni [Pietro Castellitto] thinks he'll find a springboard in an attractive art dealer [Giulia Michelini], but the latter introduces him to mafia boss Balbo [Edoardo Pesce], who wants to use Toni's talents for criminal purposes. As a portrait of the Italian mafia, this is unremarkable, but it does offer a good glimpse into how ambitious, naive youngsters can become entangled in a world of crime from which escape is impossible.
