The System plot

Does it still make sense to fight for a healthy future? Joris Postema follows a diplomat and two activists: Berlin-based antifascist Tadzio Müller, co-founder of Extinction Rebellion Pippi van Ommen in Amsterdam, and international diplomat Henk Ovink in New York, an authority on water management. These pioneers are doing everything they can to bring about real change. But what if their actions, conferences, and demonstrations come to nothing and the situation in the world only worsens? What options are there then?

Over a three-year period, Joris Postema followed three activists. At the end of the journey, he brings them together to discuss their achievements and what the future holds for them and the world. Müller is a veteran who, through trial and error, has become much more reserved (and cynical); Pippi van Ommen is an old-fashioned, proverbial street fighter involved, among other things, in Extinction Rebellion's actions on the A12 highway; and Henk Ovink is a diplomat who moves mountains to reach concrete agreements and decisions at the United Nations. The different approaches and the roundtable discussions are strengths of this fascinating, though certainly not very hopeful, documentary.
