When Japan occupied the former Dutch East Indies, Dutch women and children were sent to internment camps. Men were taken prisoner of war and forced to labor. Everyone lived under appalling conditions for more than three years of occupation. Many did not survive the camps. Following an appeal by the NOS, witnesses recounted those years of occupation and how they had a lasting impact after the war, even on subsequent generations. And what happened on the other side of the barbed wire in the meantime? Because the Indonesian population also suffered under the Japanese occupation.
