For me, genre films are a way to playfully, non-morally engage with current events. In that sense, it's a shame that so few Dutch horror films are released. What other genre so effectively taps into our fears, doubts, and tensions as horror? It's a shame that Dutch horror often descends into humorous parodies or endless copies of slasher films. But "Vleesdag" (2025) proudly brings us to the psychological tortures of Saw, Hostel, and Terrifier. Finally, a genuine gorefest that plays with the tension between activism and the bitter reality of the meat industry. How far can you go to demolish societal ills? And what is lost with an overly rigid enemy image? The acting could have been a bit better, but it's still enjoyable to watch "Vleesdag" (2025) bluntly chop up our polarized society.

A Dutch farming family is struggling. Foreign competition and nitrogen regulations are a millstone around their necks. To make matters worse, the mother of the house dies and the daughter is seriously ill in bed. When they also receive unwanted visits from criminal activists like Code Rood or Extinction Rebellion, the father loses control. While I have great respect for animal rights activists and feel a great deal of sympathy for pigs on a livestock farm, it quickly becomes clear that these are out-of-control scum, prepared to use considerable violence and driven by hatred. The livestock farmers, on the other hand, do evoke some sympathy. For that reason, I couldn't suppress a soft cheer when the activists were beaten to a pulp. Later, the farmer's father went a bit too far when he hung the activists on meat hooks and began weaning them. But that wasn't before his two sons were mutilated (and killed) and his daughter was terrorized in her sickbed.

Meat Day is, by Low Countries standards, a more than decent horror film. Incidentally, the farmers speak with a delightful accent. Is that Drenthe or Achterhoek? It certainly reminded me strongly of that wonderful farmer's rock music by Normaal and Mooi Wark. For example: I Am And Will Stay A Farmer.

Enough gore!

A powerful, exceptionally gory Dutch horror film about a group of animal rights activists who attempt to sabotage a pig farm at night. This gets completely out of hand, satisfyingly so. Well-acted and, above all, well-made, with a simple but effective script, excellent cinematography, and top-notch makeup effects. Clearly influenced by French genre films like Haute Tension and Frontière(s), but just as effective. Director Martijn Smits, known for his work on a series of children's films, goes all out here.
