Alex is a middle-aged man with two children on the verge of divorce from his wife, Tess. Alex finds an outlet when he impulsively signs up for an open mic for stand-up comedians, while former pro athlete Tess decides to pursue a career as a volleyball coach. Perhaps you need 20 years of marriage to grasp the frustrations and insecurities of these struggling couples. I couldn't understand their choices, despite Arnett and Dern's strong performances. Cooper has a supporting role as an eccentric, awkward family friend.

The effortless acting is unanimously excellent in this third film from Bradley Cooper (seen here in a funny but superfluous supporting role) as director. The improbable plot, about a middle-aged divorced man who finds an emotional outlet as a stand-up comedian, strangely enough turns out to be based on a true story.
