Britain and the Blitz plot

During World War II, the German air force carried out a sustained series of bombing raids on British cities. This documentary features restored archive footage of the raids and interviews with people who experienced the devastating period. It caused much destruction, but also brought about resilience and unity among the British people.

Friday evening, after Comandante, it was Britain and the Blitz's turn, and it was certainly an interesting subject, although I'd never seen much of it outside of "The World At War." So, I fired up Netflix and started watching...

The documentary immediately stands out with its beautifully colored images and a narrative that builds steadily, without immediately launching into the terror bombings. Because there wasn't any talk of that initially, the surreal image of people watching the clouds of anti-aircraft fire and the aircraft engaged in combat high above is beautiful, as if it were a movie, or even happening on another planet. The eventual terror bombings, I've read, begin by mistake when a squadron mistakes a residential area for the harbor or industrial target they're targeting. After the British reprisal, the floodgates finally open, and it's full throttle on everything where people live.

Yet, the series didn't initially focus on that very much. Where you might expect more aerial battles, it broadens its scope to include the island's strategic importance, the children evacuated to the countryside, resulting in a nasty sting, the civilians on the ground, the Churchill situation, but also all those young men and women under arms, where a varying image of fear, bravado, relationships, emotions, and fatalism unfolds. And several moments certainly offer a particularly stimulating overview, such as the children's experiences, the battle to save St. Paul's, the tragedy of Denis and Edith's relationship, or Christmas on the subway.

It's a truly remarkable time, with entire cities wiped out, and Britain and the Blitz manages to create a beautiful, broad overview that touches on just about every aspect. That's why I give it a solid pass.
