Sequel to Wicked occasionally loses itself in visual spectacle and has too much (often bombastic songs). However, the story cleverly gives a dark twist to The Wizard Of Oz and Jeff Goldblum is sublime as 'The Wonderful Wizard'. Madama Morrible [Michelle Yeoh] spreads lies about 'Wicked Witch' Elphaba [Cynthia Erivo] and harnesses 'Good Witch' G(a)linda [Ariana Grande] and Fyero [Jonathan Bailey] to her propaganda cart with a spectacular wedding party. For Elphaba, this is the perfect opportunity to unmask Oz [Jeff Goldblum] as an imposter. Ironically, Elphaba's sister Nessarose [Marissa Bode] threatens to throw a spanner in the works. Unnecessarily long, but the second half in particular is well-crafted.

Just a bit weaker than the first installment, which wasn't particularly great either. Some of the same flaws are present here: overall, it's rather dull and visually very boring. But the pacing, in particular, often kills the film.
Two films, together nearly 300 minutes of visuals, is simply too much. What also doesn't help is that the songs often express a feeling, a feeling that's present and can be told in five seconds. So you get four minutes of music without the story moving forward an inch. Compare that to Disney's Aladdin; many of the songs in that film really advance the plot because the lyrics tell you what's going on and what's happening. And there, a song lasts four minutes, but you're given information that would normally take 10 minutes or more.
Aside from that, the songs are generally quite mediocre. They're mostly bombastic, which somewhat obscures the fact that there aren't a single memorable melody. They're often well-sung, sure, but the foundation always lies in a good song.
The set design is decent, the CGI isn't always convincing, and thankfully the two leads are well-rehearsed, and you can really feel the chemistry. That makes the film bearable. 2.0*.

The 1st one was actually quite fun.
I found this one particularly messy and a bit contrived.
I also felt like the singing became a bit annoying more often, which didn't happen to me in the first installment, where it was also cringeworthy, but it was still enjoyable. (Aside from the quality of the singing, which is excellent.)
Some nice details, especially with Dorothy.
But I can't get higher than a 2.5.
