Agnes [Eva Victor] is visited by her best friend Lydie [Naomi Ackie], who recently moved to New York to be with her lover [ER Fightmaster]. When Preston Decker's name comes up during a dinner with friends, Agnes tenses up, and only Lydie knows why. In the non-chronological episodes that follow, we discover what happened and how Agnes dealt with it. Agnes has a personality rare in the film world, which makes her extra authentic. Victor (who also wrote the screenplay) conceals Agnes's secret with a wry (and often misunderstood by those around her) sense of humor, in which her flair for language (she is a literature professor) plays a key role. The scene in which she is summoned for jury selection is very funny, but Victor never loses sight of the deep pain hidden beneath the humor. The film deservedly received a lot of positive attention at the Sundance and Cannes film festivals and features fine supporting roles for Lucas Hedges as Agnes' new neighbor and John Carroll Lynch as a helpful passerby during a panic attack.

The film feels very hip: it's about a non-binary, bisexual young woman (at least that's my impression) with the typical characteristics attributed to Gen Z, such as being outspoken yet vulnerable, self-aware yet melancholic. At the same time, the film, with its dry, academic humor and themes like sex and depression, reminds me of old Woody Allen films. The story is about her having a bad experience during college and not being able to get over it, but finding some solace in having a friend with whom she can talk about her trauma, meeting a man with whom she can share her melancholic emotions, and having a boy next door she can fuck. The message seems to be that existence is uncomfortable but that it is made bearable by being able to share our experiences with others. While the film may well reflect the current era or generation and is certainly witty, I also find her, and therefore the film, a bit tiresome in her wallowing in her "problems" instead of moving past them.

An excellent film about the impact of a traumatic event on a woman's life. The film beautifully addresses the trauma (both poignantly and lightheartedly, as the film is certainly not entirely without humor). A promising debut for Eva Victor, who directed, wrote, and starred in this film.
