Ruigoord - Een Kosmisch Lek plot

Ruigoord, the village on the edge of Amsterdam that was once squatted by hippies, is the oldest cultural free space in the Netherlands. It has reinvented itself time and again and twice managed to save itself from Amsterdam’s expansion plans. In 2023, Ruigoord will celebrate its 50th anniversary, but what should be a festive highlight could also be its swan song. The Port of Amsterdam plans to use the surrounding oil tanks to store green hydrogen to facilitate Amsterdam’s energy transition.

While Ruigoord is preparing to celebrate its fiftieth anniversary, a delegation of the residents of this former island in the Amsterdam IJ must meet with the Amsterdam municipality to guarantee its continued existence for the next 25 years. This free haven for people who want to party is surrounded on all sides by port companies and windmills. A respectful portrait of a group of people who have (figuratively at least) distanced themselves as much as possible from capitalist society and are clearly a “free range for free-range people” who are open to every form of culture. Wingender makes excellent use of archive material and home videos of a bus tour (with the iconic 'air bus') through the world to tell the prehistory of Ruigoord.

Ultimately, this was particularly interesting because of the depiction of the interaction between a small “romantic” community and the angry outside world of Amsterdam municipal politics (which actually has the best interests of Ruigoord at heart). Almost a kind of Asterix story. I found those local administrators remarkably professional, by the way.

Actually, the history and core idea of Ruigoord could have been highlighted a bit more, those archive images left us wanting more.
