Burgemeestersmoord plot

Burgemeestersmoord tells the true story of the murder of mayor Piet Smulders (Someren) and mayor Willem Wijnen (Asten). Both mayors were part of the resistance and did everything they could to make it as difficult as possible for the occupying forces. In German-occupied North Brabant, Jan searches for his place in the war. One thing is certain for him: this cannot continue. When Jan gets a job at the town hall, he becomes entangled between the mayors of Someren and Asten and the German officer Von Obernberger. From the moment Jan is embraced by the resistance, his actions are increasingly noticed by the Germans. These actions will have major consequences for both Someren and Asten.

Attempt to portray the Brabant municipalities of Someren and Asten as a beacon of resistance during the Second World War. Unfortunately, naivety, incompetence and empty heroism dominate in this reconstruction of the period in which mayor Piet Smulders [Jan Vinken] of Someren and mayor Willen Wijnen [Maarten Waals] “heroically” gave their lives for the greater honour and glory of the local population. In 1943, Asten and Someren were apparently Judenrein, as there is no attention for the Jewish population. We do, however, witness resistance members who loudly discuss their resistance work in broad daylight in the middle of the village, the door to the best hiding place in the area is wide open in daylight and the scenario is full of plot holes. The focus is on Jan [Rene Boetselaers], the son of an NSB member who explicitly speaks out against the Nazis, but is nevertheless incorporated into the resistance. According to some, he does too little, according to others he endangers many lives. There is indeed no way to make head or tail of it. Only recommended for chauvinistic residents of the municipalities concerned – who also visited this film en masse.
