An Almost Christmas Story plot
Owlet Moon lives with his family in a forest far away from civilization. On a snowy winter day, however, he is attacked by hostile birds of prey. Injured, he is forced to hide in the knothole of a huge fir tree, which is then felled and taken to Rockefeller Plaza in New York, where it takes on the role of the legendary Christmas tree this year. Moon survives the journey, but wants to return to his parents as soon as possible. After some turbulence, he meets Luna, a girl who has lost her way in the underground. The two help each other find their home again and discover the true spirit of Christmas.

A short film by David Lowery that I knew from completely different works like A Ghost Story (2017) and The Old Man & the Gun (2018). An Almost Christmas Story is a Disney production and an animated film. A film that has Christmas as its theme. So it's a different story. The film tells the story of the little owl Moon who accidentally ends up in the human world when the tree in which he has nestled is cut down to serve as a public Christmas tree in New York. The film is aimed at children, but is also fun to watch as an adult.
As is often the case with Disney, talking animals are used. In New York, Moon meets pedantic pigeons and the girl Luna. And as is the case in a Christmas film, there is some distance at first, but the drawn characters become closer and closer to each other. And so you watch a heartwarming short film with a sweet and lost owl in the lead role, who looks wide-eyed at the strange world he has ended up in.
The animation looks nice and reminds of classic stop motion. Of course the film is computer generated and that is visible, but the animation nevertheless has a nice classic charm. Nice setting too. The characters move in a different world than ours. A world that is very closely interwoven with ours. A fairytale version of it, you could say. The characters, the setting, the nice animation and the humor make An Almost Christmas Story an entertaining short film.
