De Propagandist plot

Using previously unpublished interviews, diary fragments, family films and propaganda films, The Propagandist tells the story of the rise and fall of Dutch filmmaker Jan Teunissen (1898-1975). As a scion of a very wealthy family, Teunissen was able to pursue his aspirations as a filmmaker at an early age. During the Second World War, he became the most powerful man in the Dutch film industry. As head of the Film Department of the NSB and SS, he was soon nicknamed the 'film tsar' and 'the Dutch Leni Riefenstahl'. After the war, Teunissen was prosecuted and punished. Yet he continued to pride himself on his cunning and contacts with the bigwigs of the Nazi regime.

Egbert Barten has been researching Dutch film during the Second World War since 1989. A key role was reserved for Jan Teunissen, who was written off after his much-hyped, expensive flop Willem Van Oranje and saw his chance to make a comeback as a 'Film Tsar' in the service of the NSB and the occupying forces. Rolf Schuursma interviewed Teunissen for seven hours in 1961 and also recorded his conversations with other prominent Dutch filmmakers during the occupation. With a mix of home videos, fragments from Dutch propaganda films from the war years and archive footage, Bouwman cleverly brings the stories of Teunissen and his colleagues to life. An excellent document of an aspect of the Second World War that has largely been swept under the carpet for decades. Some will be shocked by the statement, but it is also a relief to hear someone who expresses in an honest, non-confrontational way what many Dutch people thought at the time.

Indeed quite special and revealing.

At least for me, I had no idea that the founders of Dutch cinema had become so involved with NSB propaganda and even SS promotional films.

In fact, there were fragments of his film in Der Ewige Jude.

At first you think they were just naive opportunists who just wanted to make their films at all costs, but as time goes on it becomes clear that they also had some very dubious ideas of their own.

Beautiful understatements also to try to justify their actions at that time.

About the persecution of the Jews: 'yes, that was certainly an unpleasant issue'
