After a politically motivated stabbing incident, Sergei [Grigory Dobrygin] fled Russia with his wife Natalia [Chulpan Khamatova] and daughters Alina [Naomi Lamp] and Katya [Mirosalve Pashutina] to Sweden. Alina and Katya have found their feet at a Swedish school when Sergei's asylum application is rejected due to lack of convincing evidence. The only trump card the family has left is Katya. She witnessed the stabbing, but her parents wanted to protect her from trauma. Now the future of the entire family depends on her, with unforeseen consequences. Avranas and co-writer Stavros Pamballis sharply criticize Sweden's (and other countries') strict asylum policies. Not by being heavy-handed, but by over-styling (the bleak, colourless buildings), sardonic humour (the 'First Aid with a Smile' course is a bittersweet highlight) and an extremely precise mise-en-scène that reinforces the coldness of the system. The four main actors are excellent, but Alicia Eriksson steals the film as the 'mood coach'. Bitingly funny and disturbing at the same time.

Good film about a Russian whose asylum application is rejected in Sweden. Tightly shot, which makes the film seem somewhat distant. Which is fitting with the way the authorities are portrayed here. Good acting too, especially by the eldest daughter during a long monologue scene.
