Mediocre horror comedy about the terror plant species Ick, which has existed peacefully in this world for decades but suddenly starts to become aggressive. The emphasis here is really on comedy, with mainly a lot of not so interesting, cliché high school scenes and nostalgic 00s pop-punk. The main problem is that it is just not that funny, and quite predictable. Visually it still looks okay and I ultimately enjoyed it somewhat, but it was still quite disappointing.

The film begins cheerfully, bouncy, and lightheartedly, never quite losing its character traits. It follows a popular high school football player who throws his talents away and, as an adult, becomes a simple teacher. He's considered a loser, to some extent. His fortunes change when he suddenly becomes a key player in the fight against a rampant, flesh-eating substance threatening his town.

Ick is enjoyable to watch, but not very funny. Not very exciting. Not very grimy. The effects are too obviously computer-generated for that. The characters aren't great either. They're sculpted from clichéd clay. Still, the film is quite entertaining. This is mainly due to the body count, which soars once the flesh-eating substance takes effect. The two leads, Brandon Routh and Mena Suvari, aren't necessarily annoying either. They're not deep characters, but they are fun and sympathetic enough to feel supported by their efforts. The whole thing is backed up by a string of hits from the '00s. I'm not really a fan of music from that era. Still, I knew most of the songs and have to admit that the music provides a great accompaniment.

The film is easy to watch. That basically means the film can be seen as a fast food product. Nice for the moment. The film doesn't reach the level of films like The Mist (2007), Splinter (2008) and The Ruins (2008), which are referenced in Ick. The film has its moments. The slimy monster action is quite fun. The hectic pace works well. Ick is actually a quite likeable work.

A hyperactive, highly entertaining science fiction horror film with a strong influence from director Joseph Kahn. Even with an abundance of animated computer effects and a limited budget, he manages to ensure that "Ick" never feels cheap and even takes on a spectacular form towards the end. The performances by Brandon Routh and Malina Weissman are nothing but excellent, and despite the somewhat chaotic progression and lack of breathing room, the genre shift is well-balanced. "Ick" is thus a film that is both funny and exciting, even incorporating some effective emotion towards the end. However, Kahn could certainly slow down the structure and pace at times, allowing all the characters to make an impression. This doesn't spoil the fun, however, as there is plenty of it.
