Maharaj plot
In 1862, reformer Karsandas Mulji lived in Bombay with his family and fiancée Kishori. Karsandas is religious, but does not believe in blind faith. His fiancée is a devoted follower of Jadunath Maharaj, the priest of the largest temple in Bombay. He selects Kishori for a ceremony in which he sleeps with an unmarried woman. Karsandas subsequently ends their engagement and questions this practice, which he believes exploits women. He decides to raise his voice, but is then ostracized by many people around him.
