Beyond, Ode to the Earth plot

“Beyond” is a sound & vision experience in which image and music connect seamlessly. The Greek musician Vangelis, a good friend of the director, worked with great enthusiasm on the film with Kuipers until his death. “Beyond” contains no fewer than 40 songs from Vangelis' rich oeuvre that spans six decades.

André Kuipers, the only living Dutch astronaut, delved into the film archives for a compilation of images that provide an impression of a mission to the International Space Station with the emphasis on the view of the earth. Introduced by Kuipers himself, who uses no commentary and as little text as possible with the images. The short descriptions are sometimes useful, because you can hardly see the difference between 'snowy mountain tops' and 'reflections of the sun in the water'. Beautiful images, but nothing new about the sun, the moon or Venus. Some shots are very long and the soundtrack Vangelis soundtrack composed by Kuipers is very much the same. Ends with a sequence that Kuipers describes as "psychedelic", but it mainly shows that Kuipers has never used mind-altering substances. Oh well, if someone has to be the best boy in class ...

It is quite a beautiful documentary. Yet it is sometimes a bit slow and boring. In an airplane you sometimes see the same images. Of course this is much further away, but still. The music is very beautiful. I know a few things from Vangelis, certainly the lesser known albums. So that was nice. The dance version of Armin van Buuren is also a nice moment.

Furthermore, I would have liked to see a bit more text. For example, how high they are, how fast they are flying, which country we see. At one point you can see the Netherlands very clearly.

It is definitely worth watching and we can be proud of Andre.

I understand this man's enthusiasm, but when I once attended a lecture by André Kuipers in the theatre it lasted so long that I was relieved when (I thought) it was over, and shocked when he said it was an interval. I don't remember how long it lasted, but it felt like at least 3 hours.

This film lasts an hour and a quarter, I can just about handle that, I thought. Beautiful images, Vangelis, beautiful images, Vangelis, beautiful images, Vangelis, hey what is that now? Oh too bad, gone again, beautiful images of city lights from space....which cities are these? Oh gone again...beautiful, that cloud cover. A hurricane, impressive! Images of astronauts in the space station, what are they doing? And again beautiful images of the earth.

An atmospheric moonset...what's that? The moon disappears like a ball disappearing into the sea. Hey? How's that, André?

Thunder and lightning! Hey, is that the Netherlands on its side? Yeah, nice. Is it over yet?

Oh no. We are confronted with techno music by Armin van Buuren combined with some irritating images that you still see at night when you are in bed.

Rest.

And again that recognizable synthesizer ping of Vangelis. Nice images though. Over. Phew..
