The Four Minute Mile plot

"Jahn Landys date with destiny."

It's the sporting equivalent of climbing Mount Everest: running the mile in less than four minutes. In 1954 there were two athletes who were considered capable: Englishman Roger Bannister and Australian John Landy. Bannister succeeds first. The two then competed against each other for the first time at the 1954 Commonwealth Games in what is being called the race of the century.
