Movie star Anthony Miller's [Russell Crowe] reputation has been seriously damaged by his erratic behavior, the result of addiction. He gets the chance to save his career with the role of an exorcist in a horror film, but still seems like a shadow of himself. While director Joe [Sam Worthington] tries to find a way to get his star back on track, Anthony's daughter Lee [Ryan Simpkins] begins to suspect something more serious is going on. In the opening, Anthony literally and figuratively walks ahead of a key scene from the film on a soundstage. An attempt at an intellectual horror film in the vein of Wes Craven's New Nightmare, where Miller makes a capital mistake by making a film that is just as hackneyed as the film-within-the-film. Someone must have thought that was a brilliant idea, but it just creates confusion.

Russell Crowe meanwhile chooses some smaller projects and this time his path ends up with a fairly hackneyed content, which is convincingly executed by director Joshua John Miller. The tension building during the first half in particular is successful, with a number of effective jump scares to keep the viewer alert. The acting is also not bad and the film looks fine, but the second half goes too messy to compensate for that. It is a pity that the makers come up with a good idea and ultimately very deliberately opt for traditional horror. Crowe's decline is actually not interesting to watch and the characters never become more sympathetic or interesting, but all in all it was a fine cinema visit.

The Exorcism is a prime genre film that certainly has the necessary ingredients. I enjoyed it very much, but unfortunately you are working towards an anti-climax. The last scene is not good and that is what it is working towards in these types of films.
