My Spy: The Eternal City plot

"Rome isn't ready."

It's been years since former soldier JJ, who now works as a CIA agent, befriended nine-year-old Sophie. She is now a teenager and she convinces JJ to accompany her school choir trip to Italy. There, however, they both unwittingly become pawns in an international terrorist plot. This puts JJ's boss, David Kim, and his son Collin, Sophie's best friend, in danger.

Mediocre film about a girl who goes to Italy with her choir and is accompanied by a CIA agent. An interchangeable plot for this action-comedy. Since the girl is now a teenager, the dynamic between her and the CIA agent is a bit different and less fun compared to the first part. Quite entertaining here and there, but it goes on just too long for 3.0 stars.

A lot less than the first film. The story is simple and predictable, but great fodder for an action comedy. The elaboration is very standard with no surprises. You see everything coming from afar and except for a few moments there is little to laugh about. The action is nice but doesn't excel either. The chemistry between Bautista and the little girl was a lot better in part 1. Visually there is little to criticize. 2.5

I can't imagine that many people were waiting for a sequel to the empty-headed My Spy, but here it is. CIA agent JJ [Dave Bautista] has taken 14-year-old Sophie [Chloe Coleman] under his wing. When her choir is invited to perform in Vatican City, JJ volunteers to be the tour guide. However, the trip turns out to be a cover for the plans of master villain Nancy [Anna Faris], who is threatening the G7 countries with nuclear attacks. Or something like that. No one seems to be happy about this sequel and the timing of the already mediocre humor leaves much to be desired. Bautista and Ken Jeong seem to have taken antidepressants to get through this hodgepodge of clichés (including a chase through Rome and a time bomb). Anna Faris is the only bright spot in this quickly forgettable action comedy.

Never Let Go (2024) **½
