Sex plot

Two chimney sweeps living in monogamous, heterosexual marriages both find themselves in situations that challenge their views on sexuality and gender roles. One person has a sexual encounter with another man, without experiencing this as an expression of homosexual desires or infidelity. The other suddenly experiences nightly dreams in which he is seen as a woman. This confuses and worries him. He begins to wonder to what extent the gaze of others shapes his personality and whether there are aspects of himself that he has suppressed, limiting himself.

After his department head [Thorbjørn Harr] shares a dream about David Bowie, a chimney sweep [Jan Gunnar Røise] tells him that he had sex with a male client and that he immediately told his wife [Helle Vaagland]. This statically filmed conversation is followed by a series of statically filmed conversations within the family about the implications of what happened. You can admire the fact that adults talk so openly with each other (and especially listen), but you can also be annoyed by the fact that you are watching filmed theater/talking heads for 2 hours. In any case, the meaningless intermezzos are provided with music that would not be out of place in a soft porn film that takes itself a bit too seriously.

It's hard to give a voice to this. It's very much like a documentary, but then you have to find the people who think exactly the same about this subject and record those discussions. Is film the right medium to have these kinds of discussions? A feature film, even?

That said, the perspectives are challenging enough to be engaging, and the feeling that you’ll have learned something once you leave the room is there. The talking heads argument – hm, nice Scrabble word – by mrklm is certainly valid and relevant, but I still find the content laudable.

The rest of my opinion I have explained here.

This is one of those rare films that I don't watch in its entirety. And therefore don't give it any ratings.

Being able to spend almost an hour differently.
