Flashback to the period in the life of French visual artist Niki de Saint Phalle, who worked as a model and actress in the US in the 1950s until she returned to France due to the suffocating effects of McCarthyism. Here, Niki [Charlotte LeBon] struggles with her past as a victim of incest, a trauma that is dismissed as nonsense by her psychiatrist [Alain Fromager] and results in Niki being locked up in an institution for a while. Her husband Harry Mathews [John Robinson] tries to prevent Niki from relapsing while she, after her “release”, devotes herself to a career as a visual artist. Le Bon is excellent in a dream role that gives her the opportunity to portray a wide range of complex emotions. Unfortunately, the episodic structure gives us little insight into the causes and reasons for Niki’s erratic behaviour.

A tour-de-force by Le Bon, who manages to portray Niki de Saint Phalle as touching, powerful, helpless, unbearable and desirable at the same time. We follow the artist in the years before her breakthrough, as she slowly but surely finds her way and style in France in the 1950s. Robinson also plays a fine role, calmly guiding her through turbulent times.

Remarkably, we never get to see Niki's work; the film only wants to focus on the artist herself. The emotions sometimes burst from the screen, and slowly but surely the viewer is drawn further and further into her world. At the same time, a beautiful picture of the times in this strong film, really enjoyed it.
