In 1943, the visibly exhausted Hilde [Liv Lisa Fries] must answer to a Nazi tribunal for her alleged involvement in the resistance movement. She declares her innocence and points out a number of friends as collaborators of her husband Hans [Johannes Hegemann]. Who is this woman, what exactly has she done and why does she not hesitate to point out collaborators? The truth unfolds in a non-chronological structure that Dresen uses to avoid melodrama and sentiment, but can be quite confusing, especially in the first half. Lisa Fries is excellent in this interesting story about a rarely discussed aspect of the history of the Second World War.

We follow Hilde's life from prison and her life before as life partner of activist Hans. Both periods alternate regularly. The editing is good.

I noticed that in Nazi Germany we never saw a swastika in the film. This film also stayed far away from torture and beatings. Yet the threat was palpable.

The character Hilde came forward well. Serene and penetrating, which makes you empathize with the character. It is certainly not an absolute top film. There is also almost no attention for the resistance actions of Die Rote Kapelle. In that respect the film lacks something, but I didn't care. Finely shot and beautifully portrayed. For a Nazi film rather tame.
