Il Treno dei Bambini plot

1946. Amerigo is seven years old and never left Naples and his mother Antonietta. However, his world of streets and poverty is about to change. Aboard one of the "trains of happiness" he will spend the winter in the north, where a young woman, Derna, will welcome him and care for him. Beside her, Amerigo becomes aware of a painful choice that will change his life forever. It will take him many years to discover the truth: whoever loves you does not hold you back, but lets you go.

I found it rather disappointing. The children acted only moderately and were directed too much. For example, I noticed that the groups of children did everything at the same time, for example all shouting - we are being poisoned, and then - when they are reassured - all attacking the food at the same time. It all seems so artificial and unnatural. I found the story completely uninteresting.

That wealth gap between the rich north and the poor south still plays a role in Italy today. That is why it is particularly interesting to see what the post-war situation was like. Not so rosy, as it turns out in poor and still in tatters Naples.

A nice project by the government to offer children new opportunities by temporarily placing them with host families in the north. Apart from some minor skirmishes here and there, it was presented quite positively. I can imagine that in reality it was not all rosy.

A bizarre relationship between Amerigo and his mother, a kind of love-hate relationship because of the often financially hopeless situation. Funny how the children were collectively very suspicious a few times, but just as quickly became convinced of the opposite.

Quite a beautiful film, certainly in terms of atmosphere and decor, but perhaps a bit too much feel-good to really make an impression.

Despite the (perhaps justified) criticism here, I thought it was a beautiful film. The film shows how a glimmer of hope came into the lives of those children. It is poignant to see how great the poverty was in the south of Italy. They even ate dogs and cats. But the boys are not fooled and do not trust all those adults. A film full of emotions, but fortunately they are not exaggerated.
