Creepy but unfortunately also somewhat boring horror film about a curse that hits a poor fishing village in 19th century Iceland. The desolate atmosphere and the godforsaken location are fine, but the plot and characters leave much to be desired. The horror elements are also not fully utilized, with only a handful of truly scary moments. Really a film that I would have liked to rate higher, but oh well...

This film received a lot of bad reviews, but personally, I thought it was a really good film. Nothing new, of course, but the acting was very decent, and the Icelandic setting was stunning. Not exactly a horror film, but I still found it exciting and enjoyable to watch...

The cursed.

That title and that word somewhat imply that an external entity played a role in this. The language is deficient in that respect, both in English and Dutch—is there a word that carries the meaning of "those who have brought their own disaster upon themselves, and bear the brunt of it from beginning to end"? I don't know offhand. Or perhaps a word like "wappie," although its exact definition still eludes me.

Perhaps most striking is the story's extremely cold and inhospitable setting. Between the sea and the land, there's not even the tiniest spot that's inviting. There's no place even suitable for digging a grave, no tree, nothing that offers shelter or food. The only solace is a little sunlight—an hour or so a day, when it's nice.

Besides the visuals, the film is also incredibly atmospheric, and also provides an answer to the question of what life must have been like a hundred years ago on a forgotten whaling station somewhere in Iceland or Greenland or Spitsbergen - or name all those other places where we Dutch had no business being. Not to poison nature for the greater glory of Lords XVII, not to enslave and murder the local population. And also not to float from one hallucination to the next like superstitious yokels, and set innocent sailors on fire. The parallels with today's society are plentiful. I won't even begin.

I do find it a shame that the focus has been primarily on the horror aspect, which is inherently relatively weak when set in such a stunning setting. It's also a shame that the characters lack depth. It is, however, very positive that it's a fresh and original idea for once, instead of just another rehash.
