Nice snack, but nothing more. It seems that the film has a nationalistic tinge, with the Norwegians wanting to underline their decisive contribution to the victory against Nazi Germany. After all, the Arctic convoys to Murmansk served to supply Stalingrad with weapons, and we all know the consequences of this battle from school textbooks.

I expected a bit more action, that's for sure, but the various dangers to which the vulnerable ship is exposed are presented with some exciting scenes. The two main characters (captain Skar and his right-hand man Mork) do a good job, and if you think a Bounty-like twist is coming, you're in for it.

Strong film about WWII. The film shows a piece of history that I did not know (the contribution of the Norwegians). Very strong acting and it all seems very realistic. Hard too: we see how the captain has to make difficult choices in favor of the collective. By the way, do not expect a real action film: the tension is more subtle (but not less). You feel the tension of being a 'sitting duck' all the time. Because that is what it is: you are completely visible on the open sea and marginally equipped to defend yourself against what is to come. The film is quite slow, but it also captures the atmosphere of life on a ship (which is also slow). Nevertheless, there are a few good action scenes. The tension between crew members is also well portrayed. The duration of the film is also perfect.

What a pity that there could have been more: things like the fact that the ships had to continuously chip away at the ice to avoid capsizing, the risk of collisions with icebergs, fog and the often rough weather conditions with heavy storms that the ships had to endure would have been welcome ingredients that were not used.

One of the better Norwegian war movies. For me 4 stars. Remarkably low rating on IMDB.

There are quite a few films and books about the big warships. Not so many about the less imaginative freighters, and this film fills that gap by choosing a somewhat run-down little hulk that makes you wonder whether it is worth dropping a bomb on. But that does not make the heroism of the crew any less. Perhaps a bit more personal, although quite a few opportunities are missed - and maybe that is okay, because that only distracts from the mission, according to the moral of one of the most famous books on this subject: The Cruel Sea by Nicholas Montserrat. Another story about somewhat less appealing ships, and perhaps the similarities end there.

As already mentioned, this narrative is somewhat based on the historical journey of the convoy PQ-17. More has been written and filmed about that too, and one of the best books I read is, you wouldn't expect it, by Alistair MacLean: Zr. Ms. Ulysses. His first book, and much better than his later work. Still, the film also makes a nice contribution to the overall picture, although you may have to be interested in it to stay captivated.
