Au Fil des Saisons plot

Charlie returns from boarding school to rural New Jersey to care for her ailing mother, Laura. The woman runs a chicken farm. The relationship between mother and daughter has cooled for a while and the atmosphere is tense every day. The unexpected arrival of Laura's mother Solange does not help their bond either. Solange is a French eccentric feminist. When the farm is ravaged by bird flu, the three women are forced to rise above conflict and heal old wounds.

Charlie [Morgan Saylor] pauses her studies to care for her mother Laura [Andrea Riseborough] as she battles cancer. Life on a remote chicken farm in New Jersey (where the chickens also roam freely in the house) is disappointing for Charlie, partly because of her mother's headstrong attitude and erratic behavior. And then Solange [Catherine Deneuve] shows up on the doorstep, the grandmother Charlie didn't know she had. Three generations of women are forced to face each other and their family history, while bird flu threatens the lives of Laura's beloved flock of chickens. The strong cast does what it can, but the story is too hackneyed and (therefore) too predictable to stick. The cast deserved better.

Beautiful but also somewhat exaggerated cliché family story, in which the idyllic setting in the countryside in a hobby chicken farm remains very cute but also quite far from average reality. Still, within those limitations Riseborough and Saylor are convincing and fun. Too bad Deneuve stands out too much and also does not make that much of an impression with her role - she certainly deserves it, no doubt about it, but that does not mean that the thought that someone else would have done it better does not occur.

Unusually, it is clearly a French film in atmosphere and feeling, but only Deneuve speaks a few words of French in between her broken English. Dedicated to Bertrand Tavernier.
