For this film, Moroccan Asmea El Moudir and her father recreated the neighborhood in Casablanca where they lived in June 1981. The then 12-year-old Asmea lived with her parents, her uncle and her grandmother during a violent escalation in which her neighbor Fatima was killed. Asmae invites her family and neighbors to “speak openly” about the events of that fateful day, but her very old grandmother turns out to be just as authoritarian as she was then and creates a tense atmosphere. As far as we know, there is only one photo of the massacre that was caused, but with the help of the sets and handmade puppets, Asmae manages to get her guests to tell their story about that day for the first time. Despite its original and effective approach, this documentary often comes across as contrived, making it difficult to separate genuine emotions and staged moments. The most impressive is the account of neighbor Said, an activist at the time, who was arrested and tells how and why he narrowly survived that day. Asmae El Moudir himself provided the effective voice-over, spoken in a whispering voice that shares a personal secret with you and constantly reminds you that this subject is still taboo more than 40 years later.
