At the end of February 2022, Russia invaded neighboring Ukraine from multiple sides. The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, had to embrace the fate of his country and rise as a leader in a short time. In one fell swoop Zelensky became the most important war leader of modern times. This actor-turned-president leads his country into a conflict with a nuclear superpower, becoming a melting pot in history. Amid moments of levity, inspiration and real-life stories, this documentary shows that Ukraine's great power lies in the strength of its leader, its people and, ultimately, its heart.

Sean Penn got a fair amount of shit thrown at him for this alleged vanity project, but that says more about the polarization of the public debate than about Penn himself. He started this documentary as a portrait of a former colleague (Volodymyr Zelenskyy) and his presidency. Penn rightly notes that his status as a movie star and two-time Oscar winner gives him access to places that ordinary reporters cannot easily reach. In fact, he is a citizen journalist who happened to be in Kyiv when Russia invaded the country and decided to stay in the hope that he could use his status to paint an honest portrait of Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people. It is crystal clear where Penn's loyalties lie and especially at the end he gets bogged down in sermons and tile wisdom, but this is certainly valuable as a look back at the recent history of the conflict, the first months of Zelenskyy's presidency and the first phase of the Russian invasion.
