Suzie lives in 1989 in East Berlin. She has completed high school and plans to go to college. Because she is caught with forbidden literature, that possibility is taken away from her by the East German authorities. As punishment, she is put to work in a factory. On her way to work in the factory, she is photographed by a fashion photographer. When she later comes across the photo in question in a fashion magazine, she tries to build a career as a fashion model in order to escape the yoke of East German authority.

Whoever thinks of the GDR will not immediately think of haute couture. Anyway, I don't. The image of the GDR is not exactly paved with beauty. Gray, uniform and unattractive are rather terms that apply. It is all the more surprising that in the same GDR there is the fashion magazine Sybille, which deals with beauty and shows elegant clothes made in East Germany. Around the magazine (at least in the film) there is a community of free spirits who indulge themselves in this way. As long as it takes of course.

The magazine to which the characters in the film are attached actually existed. It existed from 1956 and showed a fashion image that had nothing to do with social-democratic reality. Director and writer Aelrun Goette, who herself was once depicted as a photographic object in the magazine, tells the story of Suzie who is discovered on the street and finds her photo on the cover of the Sybille.

What follows is a story about unexpected opportunities, shattering dreams, a first love and the urge for freedom. Pretty nice, but not very spectacular. The film tells of a coming-of-age that can be defined fairly well in advance. And as often happens in a fairly conventional drama, the secondary characters are actually more interesting than Suzie.

Unfortunately, you won't get to know much about the magazine. Hardly any attention is paid to the editorial processes, the creation of the fashion collections and the social position of the magazine. The magazine is just an interesting backdrop against which Suzie's coming-of-age takes place. A coming-of-age that delivers a well-acted and solid drama, but could have used a little more depth to lift it out of the conventional atmosphere.

Painful reminder of the oppressive life in the former GDR, where suspicion and betrayal were commonplace. A young woman, discovered by chance by a fashion photographer, is torn between hope for a better life and the raw reality of everyday life. A beautiful, informative film about what it was like before the fall of the wall.
